Belagavi: In a remarkable medical achievement, a 16-day-old male baby was successfully treated for a rare heart condition at KLE’s Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital.
The baby, weighing less than 2.5 kg, was referred from a private hospital with concerning symptoms, including bluish skin, lips, and nails, indicating a severe lack of oxygen-rich blood. The infant was also experiencing difficulty accepting feeds, had a rapid heart rate, weak pulse, and was restless.
Diagnosis and Rare Heart Condition
Dr. Danish Memon, a Pediatric Cardiologist, quickly diagnosed the baby with a rare congenital heart defect known as Dextro-Transposition of the Great Arteries (d-TGA). This condition is seldom detected during prenatal stages. In a normal heart, the aorta arises from the left ventricle, and the pulmonary artery arises from the right ventricle. However, in d-TGA, these great arteries have incorrect connections, with the aorta originating from the right ventricle, leading to the circulation of deoxygenated blood to the body. Meanwhile, the pulmonary artery arises from the left ventricle, causing oxygenated blood to return to the lungs.
