Hubballi: at 90, Mallamma Somappa Valmiki keeps herself busy in planting saplings, doing gardening work, if you visit her house in Rajeev Nagar you feel you are amid a jungle, that is the effect of her 15 years of work creating a mini jungle surrounding her house.
Mallamma married Somappa at 16, her husband was in the forest department, she spent most of her life in Uttar Kannada district along with her husband. The love of nature; inspired her to enhance greenery wherever her husband transferred. Since then she an ardent lover of greenery.
When the couple moved to Hubballi, some 15 years ago along with his family, she started feeling suffocated in the city environment. She grew more plants and wanted the Malnad feeling surrounding her house. As a result, she created a lush green environment.
Around 15 years back, the surrounding her house was like plain ground. Mallamma adores greenery so much that in one and half decade she transformed her home into a miniature urban jungle.
She started planting saplings to surround her house and started taking care of them. Even at this age, she takes care of the plants just like babies. She waters the plants, removes the weeds, takes care of the plants and trees from dawn to dusk and her grandsons assist her in this work.
If you visit her house, many trees welcome you. She had grown areca nut trees, a variety of mango trees, jack trees, almond neem, coconut, ghaf trees. This apart she grew Brahma Kamala, hibiscus, jasmine, wild jasmine, Champa and other flower plants. She grew carom plants too in her house premises.
Mallamma is a genuine example of a nature lover. She stands apart among those who cut trees in front of their houses, citing various reasons.
