Hubballi: On Wednesday, the under-trial prisoner who escaped from Hubballi’s sub-jail on Sunday was found dead under mysterious circumstances.
Vijayanand Naregal, who is charged with murder and is being held in the sub-jail, escaped on Sunday by taking advantage of a job cleaning the area around the prison. The police were on the hunt to nab him but on Wednesday he was discovered dead near Annigeri town beside railway tracks.
According to sources, Vijayanand fled the jail and was hiding in the house of a relative in Annigeri. He allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a speeding train on Wednesday. However, it is unclear if he killed himself or was murdered.
According to Hubballi Sub Jail Superintendent Ashok Bhajantri, he won the trust of jail officials and had previously faithfully completed the task allocated to him, but on Sunday, he abruptly bolted.
According to sources, Vijayanand, an Anand Nagar resident, and his friends killed two shepherds in Kundgol taluk in an attempt to steal sheep. He was depressed after six inmates facing various charges were recently convicted, and his bail petition was also denied in court, so he may have gone to extremes, fearing that he would be convicted as well, said the sources.
