SKKIM: The Indian Army said in a statement that 16 jawans, including three junior commissioned officers and 13 soldiers, died in an accident on Friday when the vehicle they were travelling in went down a steep hill and plunged into a gorge. The incident happened in North Sikkim in Zema. The vehicle was a part of a convoy of three vehicles that had travelled from Chatten to Thangu in the morning. The truck fell down a steep hill while navigating a tight bend while travelling to Zema, according to an Army statement.
Four soldiers who were injured have been airlifted to hospital, said source.
