New Delhi, 18 May (HS): All set to become Chief Minister of Karnataka for the second time, Siddaramaiah is experienced and well-calculated.
He tiptoed into Indian politics with baby steps in 1983, when he first became a member of the legislative assembly on a Bhartiya Lok Dal ticket. In 1985, he became a minister in the Ramkrishna Hegde government.
After a fallout with former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, he quit the Janata Dal (S), despite being the party president from 1999-2004, and joined the grand old party.
He gradually grew in his stature; so much so that Congress saw no one else at the much-needed command of authority except for Siddaramaiah. Five years later, he was commanding the Congress Karnataka unit from the front, by occupying the chair of the Chief Minister. It is a clear reflection that the party accepted his mass leader with a clean image.
Amidst a lot of political speculation and uncertainty, Siddaramaiah completed his full tenure in office till 2018. After a long hiatus, the state witnessed a CM complete his full term. A seasoned and successful politician, he has won nine elections out of the dozen contested. His style of working has helped him remain in control and understand the nuances of administration.
Known to be a rebel, every position he held, his attitude grew. Luck favoured him, by never having to face any strong opposition. This time, the Congress did have an option, PCC President DK Sivakumar, but the high command selected Siddaramaiah.
