Shock treatment for consumers

Karnataka residents will have to pay more for electricity starting October 1st, as the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has increased power tariffs for the third time this year due to changes made as part of Fuel Adjustment Charges (FAC).

According to the order, users of the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM), which serves Bengaluru city, will have to pay an additional 43 paise per unit, while customers of the Mangalore Electricity Supply Corporation Limited (MESCOM) will have to pay an additional 24 paise. Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation Limited (CESCOM) customers will pay 35 paise more per unit, as well Hubballi Electricity Supply Corporation Limited (HESCOM) and Gulbarga Electricity Supply Corporation Limited (GESCOM) customers (GESCOM).

The rates will be in effect from October 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023. Prices have been raised due to rising coal rates and other costs, according to KERC officials. Officials have stated that the hikes may be withdrawn once the accrued fuel charges have been fully recovered.

The KERC has raised electricity rates for the third time this year. It increased by 35 paise per unit on average in April and by 25-30 paise per unit in June.
