Hubballi: Former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar has questioned why senior BJP leaders are solely targeting him in their high-decibel election campaign against him. He asked what he did wrong to the party and questioned why the “big guns” were attacking a “poor fellow” like him.
Shettar made these remarks at a press conference in response to the negative campaign by the BJP and their calls to communities not to vote for him. He also noted that BJP leaders had made Hubballi their headquarters to defeat him. However, Shettar asserted that he enjoys the support of the people of Hubballi-Dharwad Central constituency, and they will vote for him despite the BJP’s efforts.
Shettar recently joined the Congress after the BJP denied him a ticket to contest the upcoming election from Hubballi Central constituency. In response, senior BJP leader and former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa criticized Shettar and called on Veerashaiva Lingayats to defeat him, claiming that he had betrayed the party. However, Shettar expressed his respect for Yediyurappa and noted that Yediyurappa had supported him and made efforts to secure him a ticket. Shettar said that Yediyurappa had become helpless in the BJP, and his criticism would be considered a blessing rather than a criticism.
Shettar criticized BL Santosh, whom he held responsible for the BJP denying him a ticket. He accused Santosh of dividing Lingayats and firing bullets from someone else’s shoulder instead of directly criticizing him.
Shettar also stated that negative publicity and any campaign by the BJP would not make a difference to him. Ultimately, it would be the people of the Hubballi-Dharwad Central constituency who would decide the election, and he believes they will support him because of his heart-to-heart connection with them.
