A rare red weather warning has been issued by the Met Office as Storm Darragh sweeps across parts of Wales and south-western England, with powerful winds threatening to cause significant disruption and danger to life. The warning, valid from 03:00 to 11:00 GMT on Saturday, has urged millions to stay indoors and remain vigilant, as wind gusts reaching up to 91 mph are expected to batter the region.
The warning covers western and southern Wales, as well as the Bristol Channel coast. Flying debris and falling trees pose serious risks, including the potential for injury. The intensity of the storm has left tens of thousands of homes without power, with residents advised to prepare for power cuts by gathering essential items such as flashlights, batteries, and portable chargers.
Emergency alerts have been sent to three million people across the affected areas, advising them to stay off the roads and avoid unnecessary travel. In addition, amber weather warnings remain in effect for Northern Ireland, Wales, and western England until Saturday morning.
The Met Office has warned that buildings could suffer damage, including roof tiles being blown off, and large waves are expected along the coast. The severe weather could also lead to road closures and the shutdown of bridges due to fallen trees and other hazards.
Storm Darragh follows in the wake of storms Bert and Conall, which caused severe flooding last month. This marks the fourth named storm of the season. Authorities are urging everyone to take all necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property as widespread disruption is expected.
