An accused has been arrested by the APMC Navanagar police in connection with the alleged religious conversion case. According to the authorities, the main accused who attempted to forcefully convert a victim’s faith has been detained.
After hearing the news on Sunday evening, Bajarang Dal and VHP activists staged a demonstration on the Hubballi-Dharwad main road, demanding the arrest of the accused. Leaders and members of the VHP and Bajarang Dal including MLA Arvind Bellad assembled in front of the Navanagar police station and demanded that the accused be arrested immediately.
They remained on a Dharna in front of the police station till 11.30 p.m., and they only departed after Police Commissioner Labhu Ram assured them that the accused would be apprehended.
Police Commissioner Labhu Ram confirmed the arrest and stated that the accused had been arrested.
According to sources, Somu Avaradhi, a resident of Navanagar, was detained on Monday evening and would be produced before the court.
On Sunday afternoon, tension engulfed the Bhairidevarkoppa and Navanagar areas.
The Bajrang Dal and VHP activists allegedly recited mantras and sang bhajans opposing Somu Avaradhi’s attempt to convert the faith of the victim.
