Raichur city observed a bandh on Friday, demanding the establishment of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the district.
The AIIMS Horata Samiti had called for the bandh, which was supported by various organisations. The residents of Raichur have been protesting for the past 316 days for the establishment of the premier institute in their district, and the intensity of the protest increased on Friday.
The bandh was observed ahead of Union Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Raichur on March 26, where he is expected to participate in a convention organised by the BJP in Devadurg.
According to the sources, the Bandh was observed with the intention to make Amit Shah aware of the issue and its significance. The business establishments in the district supported the bandh by closing their operations, while buses and autorickshaws continued to operate as usual.
The protest has been going on for 316 days, with two new individuals sitting on a hunger strike for the past 66 days to support the cause.
