On Friday, the national parliament issued a notice stating that Rahul Gandhi is disqualified from being a member of Lok Sabha due to his conviction, reported national media.
Gandhi was convicted on Thursday in a criminal defamation case for his remarks about the “Modi surname” and was sentenced to two years in prison. However, the court granted him bail and suspended the sentence for 30 days so that he can appeal in a higher court. The complaint was filed by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi in response to Gandhi’s alleged comment, “How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?”
On Friday, Gandhi briefly attended Lok Sabha, but the House was adjourned for an hour soon after it convened for the day, reported the media.
