Draupadi Murmu, the presidential candidate of the BJP-led NDA, was elected as India’s 15th president on Thursday. She defeated Yashwant Sinha, the candidate of the opposition. On July 21, the votes were counted. Murmu, 64, is the first Indian President from a tribal community, the first Indian President from Odisha, and the first Indian President born after India’s independence. Furthermore, she is only the country’s second female president.

Minister Murugesh R Nirani posted a Koo, immediately after results were announced. The minister wrote, “A historic day for the people of India. A new legacy has been created for our nation. My heartfelt congratulations to Smt. Draupadi Murmu Ji on being elected as the President of India. May your journey of strengthening our nation be a fruitful and rewarding one.(SIC)”
