Hubballi: The North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) has reported that their vigilance teams caught 13,956 ticketless passengers traveling on NWKRTC buses from January to April. As a result, a total fine of Rs 13.24 lakh was collected from these individuals, according to H Ramangoudar, the PRO of NWKRTC.
17 lakh passengers travel on NWKRTC buses
Across the 55 bus depots in Dharwad, Bagalkote, Belagavi, Gadag, Haveri, and Uttar Kannada, NWKRTC operates approximately 4,445 buses on a daily basis. It has been observed that around 16 to 17 lakh passengers travel without tickets on these buses each day. In order to curb revenue loss for the corporation, the central office and respective divisions conduct regular ticket checks. During the period from January to April this year, a total of 71,021 checks were conducted, resulting in the detection of 13,956 ticketless passengers. The fines collected from them amounted to Rs 13,24,245.
According to the Central Motor Vehicle Act, traveling without a ticket on public transport buses is a punishable offense. Offenders are required to pay a fine of 10 times the ticket price or Rs 500 on the spot, in addition to facing embarrassment in front of fellow passengers, as stated by the PRO.
