Mexican authorities have uncovered the remains of at least 34 individuals in a mass grave in Zapopan, located in the violence-stricken state of Jalisco. The discovery was confirmed by state prosecutor Salvador Gonzalez, who stated that the search began in February and involved cadaver dogs and ground-penetrating radar.

Jalisco is a known hub for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), a powerful and brutal drug trafficking organization. The cartel has been linked to abductions, killings, and the use of false job ads to recruit victims, many of whom are tortured or killed. The region is among the worst affected by Mexico’s crisis of missing persons, with over 127,000 people unaccounted for nationwide.

CJNG leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias “El Mencho,” remains one of the most wanted criminals globally, with a $15 million U.S. bounty on his head.

Mexico’s long-running cartel violence has led to the discovery of numerous mass graves. In recent years, remains have been found across several states, with some of the largest sites containing over 250 skulls. Since 2006, organized crime-related violence has claimed nearly 480,000 lives across the country.
