Man who shared social media post in support of Nupur Sharma, beheaded, Udaipur tense

On Tuesday, two people decapitated a 40-year-old man in broad daylight at his tailoring shop in a marketplace in Udaipur, following an exchange of a series of inflammatory social media remarks in recent days.

Kanhaiya Lal, the victim, had shared social media posts in support of suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma, who had made insulting remarks against the Prophet in a television debate last month.

According to sources in the Union Home Ministry, a National Investigation Agency (NIA) team has been dispatched to Udaipur to gather information on the crime. According to the sources, the NIA was expected to take over the investigation, categorising it as a terror act.

In Udaipur, marketplaces were closed and mobile internet connections were suspended to prevent rumours from spreading. As a precaution, a curfew was implemented in seven police station parts of the city late at night.

The murderers recorded the incident and shared it on social media. They later published another video showing two chopping daggers and claimed credit for the crime. Late in the evening, the two suspects were apprehended in the neighbouring Rajsamand district.

Kanhaiya Lal, who had previously been arrested and questioned by city police in connection with his post, had closed his business on Maldas Street for a week and informed the police that he feared for his life. He only started coming to his shop on Monday. Traders in the neighbourhood put his body outside the shop and urged that the killers be apprehended immediately.

Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot said that strict action against the accused would be taken and he called on public to maintain peace.

The assailants identified themselves in an  video as Mohammad Riyaz and Ghouse Mohammad,
