Hubballi: Director General and Inspector General of Police Praveen Sood emphasized the importance of knowing the mobile device one is using and being well-informed before purchasing a second-hand phone.
Speaking at an event organized by the Hubballi-Dharwad City Police Commissionerate, which aimed to return recovered lost phones to their rightful owners, the top cop revealed that stolen or lost phones often end up in marketplaces where second-hand or pre-owned mobile devices are sold.
Although there is nothing inherently wrong with purchasing second-hand phones, thieves tend to resell stolen phones to make a profit. However, thanks to technological advancements like the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal, it has become easier to track down lost or stolen phones. If an individual unwittingly purchases a stolen phone, they will be required to return it to the rightful owner once contacted by the authorities. Therefore, it is prudent to verify the authenticity of the mobile device before buying it, Sood advised.
Sood also recommended that one download the “Know Your Mobile” app from C-Dot, available on the Play Store, to easily verify the authenticity of a phone by checking its IMEI number and determining whether it has been blacklisted. He instructed twin cities police commissioner Raman Gupta to promote this app, so that more people can be informed about it and buy genuine handsets for themselves.
