Hubballi: In a groundbreaking achievement, doctors at KIMS Hospitals have successfully performed an ABOI kidney transplant on a 25-year-old patient suffering from renal failure. The transplant was conducted on March 6, and the patient, who is the son of the donor, his mother, recovered well and will be discharged on Friday.
What is an ABOI kidney transplant?
Speaking to reporters here on Friday, KIMS Director Dr. Ramalingappa Antartani and Dr. Venkatesh Moger, Head of the Department of Nephrology, said that an ABOI kidney transplant is a type of kidney transplantation in which the blood types of the donor and recipient are different. Normally, a person can only receive a kidney transplant from a donor who has the same blood type as them. This is because if the blood types are different, the recipient’s immune system will recognize the transplanted kidney as foreign and attack it, leading to rejection, they said.
The patient Abhishekh M Bogar, 25, from Savadatti was on dialysis for the last 10 months after his kidneys failed to perform. As the patient’s relatives were waiting for a cadaver transplant, her mother decided to give one of her kidneys but the challenge was that the mother’s blood group was B+ve and the patient’s was A+ve.
Dr. Moger said that to perform the transplant, the doctors used a combination of techniques, including Glycosorb, a special filter brought from Sweden at the expense of the patient, which was used to reduce the titer to 1:8, and Rituximab 500 injections, which were administered before the transplant. The patient was kept on immunosuppressant for 15 days prior to the surgery, ensuring a successful transplant.
The ABOI kidney transplant is a highly complex procedure that requires significant expertise and experience. The surgery took four hours to complete and was performed by a team of highly skilled doctors led by him. The team of doctors included Dr. MR Patil, Dr. Vivek Ganiger from the nephrology department, Dr. Jaideep Ratkal, Dr. Manjuprasad, and Dr. Sampathkumar from the urology department, Dr. Sheetal Hiregoudar and Dr Roopa from the anesthesia department, and Shivanand Honakeri was the transplant coordinator.
Speaking about the success of the surgery, Dr. Moger said, “This is a significant achievement for KIMS Hospitals and is a testament to the expertise and dedication of our medical team.” “ABOI kidney transplants have been a challenge in the past, but with the use of advanced techniques such as Glycosorb and Rituximab, we have been able to perform this surgery with a high degree of success.”
He also thanked Dr. Purushottam Reddy, HoD of Pathology, whose team played a critical role in ABO-incompatible kidney transplants by performing pre-transplant antibody screening, post-transplant monitoring, and the management of post-transplant complications. He thanked Dr. Chetan Hosakatti, the vascular surgeon, for his role in the surgery.
Dr. Arun Kumar C, Dr. Siddheshwar Katkol Dr. Laxmikant, and others were present.
