Hubballi: Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department doctors have performed a very complex surgery by doing zygomaticomaxillary complex reconstruction and orbital walls with a customised 3D titanium implant with relocation of the eyeball and reconstruction of the upper and lower eyelid.
The complex surgery was performed by Dr Manjunath Vijapur, HoD, of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with his team of doctors: Dr Vasanth Kattimani, Dr Anuradha Nagangoudar, Dr Spoorthy Shetty, Dr Mamtha, anaesthesiologist Dr Dharmesh, and ophthalmologist Dr Vivekanand Jivanagi.
Fakirappa, a 40-year-old resident of Katur, in Mundagol taluk of Uttar Kannada district, was attacked by a bear on July 30 in the Mundagod forest limit, suffering severe injuries to his right facial region and losing his cheek bone in the attack, said Dr Manjunath Vijapur, and added that he had primary wound management at a local health facility and later he was recommended to KIMS, where the patient was admitted to the maxillofacial surgery department.
After the diagnosis, the doctors decided to reconstruct the zygomaticomaxxillary complex, which he lost in the animal attack, and the orbital walls with a customised 3D titanium implant with relocation of the eyeball and reconstruction of the upper and lower eyelid. The titanium implant was prepared by a Bengaluru-based implant maker and the surgery was performed on September 12. The doctors managed to save the patient’s vision, said the doctors.
The doctors said that the patient is recovering and that he may require a few more surgeries based on his recovery.
KIMS Director Dr. Ramalingappa said that they have sent a proposal to the government to convert this maxillofacial surgery unit into a full-fledged department as the doctors are really doing a good job and performing more and more complex surgeries, and he expressed confidence that the government would give its nod to the proposal.
KIMS Medical Superintendent Dr Arunkumar Chavan, Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr Rajashekhar Dyaberi and others were present.
