North Korean leader Kim Jong-un recently inspected Russian military assets, including nuclear-capable strategic bombers and hypersonic missiles, during his visit to Russia, reported the Guardian.
He was accompanied by Russia’s Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, who greeted Kim at the Knevichi airfield near Vladivostok. The visit has raised concerns in the US and South Korea, who fear that Russia’s renewed friendship with North Korea could provide Kim with access to sensitive missile technology while potentially aiding Russia in its conflict in Ukraine.
During the visit, Kim was shown strategic bombers like the Tu-160, Tu-95, and Tu-22M3, which can carry nuclear weapons. Shoigu demonstrated the MiG-31I supersonic interceptor aircraft equipped with Kinzhal air-launched hypersonic missiles.
Russia has been keen to publicize Kim’s visit and hint at possible military cooperation with North Korea. This move allows Russia to challenge the US and its allies while potentially securing military support for its actions in Ukraine.
While discussions on military matters and cooperation took place, there were no formal agreements signed during Kim’s visit. The international community is closely monitoring the developments and potential violations of UN sanctions against North Korea due to the visit.
