Karnataka Police Fact Check team says the viral video claiming Karnataka police arrested burqa-clad agitators is not from the state. Not related to Hijab, it was old smuggling case from AP

A video has been widely shared on various social media platforms with the claim that Karnataka police have arrested Muslims who were protesting against the hijab ban in educational institutions, and 40 % of them were found to be boys in women’s attire.

The Karnataka State Police Fact Check team verified the video and found that the incident took place on August 18, 2020, in Telangana state and not anywhere in Karnataka as is being claimed in the viral video now. The man in the video was arrested while trying to smuggle liquor from Telangana to Andhra Pradesh. He had put on a burqa to disguise himself. This incident took place at the Panchalingala check post in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh and not in Karnataka.

The police also attached the URL of the original news to clarify that the video was not from Karnataka state. Though in the video, policemen and the people present on the occasion speak in Telugu, people started spreading the old video. The police also requested people be vigilant while forwarding WhatsApp forwards.
