JUST FOR TODAY…..

Dr NV Palkar, Anesthesiologist, Florida, USA.

We’re all humans and we all have defects. No one is perfect and life’s journey is to achieve betterment in our own behaviour and attitude.

How we react to what happens is dependent upon our own emotional makeup, our upbringing and the circumstances that we have faced.

Sometimes (erroneously) we overreact and sometimes we underreact, sometimes (erroneously) we minimize big things and some other times we maximize little things.

How we react affects us and also the people around us. It also affects our personal wellbeing and happiness and it affects the people around us similarly.

So, how do we figure out the best way to bring about a positive change in ourselves (and also positively influence the people who get affected by our behaviour and attitude)?

Over time, I have devised the following plan for myself and I try to live by these principles to the best of my ability. I am not perfect, but I try. The more I try and the longer I practice, it seems to get easier to follow these principles. This is not intended to be advice to anyone in particular, but if you try and stick to these principles that I follow, it is sure to make a positive change in you.

JUST FOR TODAY:

Just for today, I will live one day only and not try to solve the whole problem of life at once.

Just for today, I will be unafraid of life and death, unafraid to enjoy the beautiful and to be happy. People are as happy as they make up their minds to be.

Just for today, I will adjust myself to what is, and not try to make everything over to suit me. If I can not have what I like, I will try to like what I have.

Just for today, I will be agreeable, cheerful, charitable, praise people for what they do and not criticize them for what they can not do. If I find a fault, I will forgive it and forget it. I will not try to improve or regulate anyone except myself.

Just for today, I will have a plan. I may not follow it exactly, but I will have one. It will save me from hurry, worry and indecision.

Just for today, I will look at life with fresh eyes and discover the wonder of it. I will know that as I give to the world, so the world will give to me.

Just for today, I will not show it if my feelings are hurt.

Just for today, I will find a little time to relax and to realize what life is and can be., time to think about God and get a better perspective on myself.

These are simple yet profound principles and I have personally tried to live by these for the last thirty years and it is my strong impression that it has helped me. Try it.
