Jagadish Shettar meets Rajnath Singh

Bengaluru: Former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar met with Union Defence Minister Rajanath Singh in Bengaluru on Tuesday and submitted a memorandum requesting the withdrawal of an award for the construction of a boundary wall on defence land in Vishweshar Nagar in Hubballi.

The defence land measuring 17.10 acres was handed over to the NBCC, a Navaratna (CPSC), to protect the land from encroachment, and the NBCC recently gave a contract to Vanamaali Ifra to construct a boundary wall on the said land.

Recently, Jagadish Shettar conducted a meeting with the officials in Hubballi as the process for the construction of the boundary wall began.

Shettar, in a letter addressed to the minister, said that the defence land is surrounded by residential areas like Rajnagar, the KSCA stadium, Vishweshwar Nagar, and Shanti Colony; if the boundary wall is constructed, these areas will be isolated from each other, and connectivity with each other becomes difficult.

He also stated that if the compound wall is built, the rainwater flowing from Nrupatunga Hill will be stopped, and hundreds of houses will be at risk of flooding during the rainy season. Many drinking water and sewer lines under this site are at risk of being affected. The people of this area and surrounding areas will have no road connectivity, and public infrastructure will suffer. There is a fear that the way to and from the Rajnagar cricket ground will be blocked.

Shettar also said that there was less than 0.1% encroachment on this land. If the defence ministry hands over this land to HDMC or the state government, a better project can be implemented there for the people. In addition, a proposal will be sent to the Defence Ministry, informing the HDMC to seek an alternative location via the deputy commissioner to hand it over to the ministry for return of this land to the local authority.

This space was given to the defence department 30 years ago to give shooting training to NCC cadets. So far, the defence department has not started training in this space because it is not possible to conduct training between residential areas. Recently, the department conducted a survey and proposed constructing a compound wall around the space. When the matter was explained to the minister, he agreed to stop the work and shift to an alternative location; he said.
