Belagavi: Cybercrime is blooming in the unlimited world of social media, and many people are becoming victims of these new generation scams. The majority of victims wait until it is too late to report the scam to the police.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Dr Vikram Amte, detailed the golden hour of reporting cyber frauds to reporters on Saturday.
According to him, 38 cyber frauds were reported in the city limits of Belagavi in 2020, and nine incidents have been reported so far in 2021. Cyber frauds of Rs 65 lakh were reported in the city in both years, with Rs 29,13,303 credited to victims’ accounts since they reported the crime within an hour of it happening, he said.
It will be difficult to freeze the victims’ accounts and recredit the stolen money, according to DCP Dr Amte, if the victim fails to notify the fraud within an hour of the occurrence. As a result, he advised residents to be cautious of cyber fraud and to report any cases of cheating to the police immediately.
