It was an oral instruction from CM, not to wear the gown: Iresh Anchatgeri

Mayor Iresh Anchatgeri receiving CM at airport without wearing the gown in Hubballi on Sunday

Mayor Iresh Anchatgeri has said that Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai himself had asked him not to wear the gown and end this obsolete practice, which was started by the British. Speaking to reporters after adjourning the monthly general body meeting of the HDMC for an indefinite period, he said he had gone to welcome the CM wearing the gown. The CM had said not to wear it, and on the next visit, I gave him a letter to pass an order to end the gown culture. He said he would pass an order, but the CM has yet to pass an order in this regard.

“Based on the oral instruction of the CM, who is the administrative head of the state, I shun the practise of wearing the gown. And I welcomed the President of India, the Governor, and the CM during their visit to Hubballi for Poura Sanmana without wearing it, “he said.

“Recently, I welcomed the President without wearing it.”If I wore the gown during the meeting, it would be disrespectful to the President, and the HDMC body is not superior than the President,” said Anchatgeri, and added that he was willing to allow the Congress corporators to discuss the issue in the meeting, but they did not listen. After adjourning the meeting thrice, it was adjourned sine die.

He said he had asked the Congress members not to stage a protest, but despite repeated requests, they did not return to their seats from the well. Anchatgeri said, “The CM is expected to issue an order in this regard within a week. If he fails to issue one, in the next meeting I will wear the gown.”
