Innocents should not be arrested: Halwoor

Hubballi: A Congress party delegation led by Hubballi-Dharwad (East) MLA Prasad Abbayya met Police Commissioner Labhu Ram at the Old Hubballi police station and urged the police to do everything possible to keep society peaceful.

Altaf Halwoor alleged that it is a conspiracy and the police needed to do a comprehensive investigation into this incident, few miscreants who covered their faces with their clothes threw stones during the violence. And at the same time, the high mast lights were switched off abruptly. How and why the lights were switched off abruptly needs to be investigated, he said, adding that the violence was a conspiracy and police should reveal it.

He said the police should not arrest any innocent people in this connection and that those guilty should be punished severely.

Another Congress leader, Altaf Kittur, said the violence looks like a major conspiracy and the police should arrest the real culprits. And he also suffered an injury in the stone-pelting incident when he was coming out of the station after meeting the police officials.

Police sources said that they have arrested more than 40 people in connection with the violence and one more case has been registered. The total number of cases registered in connection with the last night’s violence rose to seven.

Congress leader Rajat Ullagaddimath said that he was anticipating that the government would do something to cover the 40 % issue and this incident happened.  He demanded the police to send real culprits behind bars.
