In a dramatic and unexpected shift, tensions between India and Pakistan cooled significantly on Saturday evening, as both nations agreed to a full ceasefire—bringing an abrupt pause to days of escalating hostilities.
The breakthrough came at approximately 5:25 PM IST, when U.S. President Donald Trump announced that India and Pakistan had reached a consensus on an “immediate and comprehensive” ceasefire. The announcement followed what Trump described as a “long night of negotiations” facilitated by the United States.
Shortly after the announcement, official confirmations were issued by both the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, affirming that the ceasefire agreement was in effect.
According to Indian officials, the truce across land, air, and sea was formalized after Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations initiated a call with his Indian counterpart at 3:30 PM on Saturday. The ceasefire was put into effect just 90 minutes later, at 5:00 PM.
Diplomatic Momentum Initiated by Trump
President Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, at 8:00 AM Washington time to share the development. “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE,” he posted. “Congratulations to both countries for showing common sense and great intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Shortly afterward, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed the announcement on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that he had spoken earlier in the day with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistan’s Army Chief General Asim Munir. Rubio added that both countries had agreed not only to halt military actions but also to begin structured talks on a range of bilateral issues at a neutral venue.
