Hubballi: When the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic started raging, the state government announced a lockdown to curb the spreading of the novel Coronavirus. Hundreds of families who depended on their daily wages and their daily work to meet both ends, they once again started feeling the same pain as they faced when the nationwide lockdown was announced last year.

Hundreds of people are expecting government help because of the lockdown to curb the spreading of the virus . Many lost jobs and most of them lost earnings because of the lockdown. They could not pay for recurring expenses such as electricity bills, house rent, and purchasing rations, which was also turned most hard task. Many borrowed money from relatives and friends just to run the show.

Congress lends a helping hand to those in need.

As soon as the state government announced the lockdown, it was the congressmen who came to the rescue of many families; they started helping people in distress.

A SAVIOUR CALLED ‘RAJAT’ EMERGED

Many people might not know that the young Congress leader, Rajat Ullagaddimath, who does good deeds with no publicity, has helped hundreds of families in distress.

Rajat, a young leader emerging in the party, had swung into action to help the people. He, from his pocket, spent lakhs of rupees just to support the families that were in trouble.

He and other like-minded people have been distributing relief kits to many families. They first distributed safety kits like sanitisers, face shields, masks, and gloves to the police, who are also at risk of contracting the infection.

Rajat and his team distributed bed sheets, pulse oximeters, sphygmomanometers and other equipment to Chitaguppi hospital.

The team knew that Shastris, who perform pooja and other religious rituals, were vulnerable to the pandemic, so Rajat and his team assisted 500 priests and distributed Rs 1,200 kits to each of them.

Because of restrictions on the movement of the public during the lockdown, it was the auto-rickshaw drivers who were affected the most. The team helped around 300 such auto drivers and distributed a relief kit worth Rs 500 to each of them.

They did not stop there; his friends, Sunil Malpati and Govind Beldoni, began distributing relief kits to the affected people in their areas.

Team Rajat helped Imam Sabs and Moujansabs, who are also in distress because of the pandemic. The team went to 71 mosques in the city and helped the people who were there.

A total of 2,500 tonnes of vegetables were purchased.

Recently, KPCC president DK Shivakumar was in the city. He had an interaction with the farmers and, after listening to their plight, the KPCC president instructed Congressmen to buy vegetables from these farmers and distribute the vegetables among the poor. As a result, both farmers and the poor benefited from this act.

Based on the instruction, Congress leader NA Harris bought 2,500 tonnes of vegetables from the farmers by spending money from his pocket and Congress leaders Nagaraj Gouri and Rajat Ullagaddimath and others distributed them.

10,000 HOME ISOLATION KITS

The team also prepared 10,000 home isolation kits meant to be distributed among the Covid positive patients. They distributed a few hundreds of them to hospitals and the remaining ones to the positive patients residing in various areas of the city.

When hubliexpress.com spoke to Congress leader Rajat Ullagaddimath, he said he did not know that the lockdown would be extended for so long. The poor and the middle class are affected because of this.

“Initially, I did not think that I could help so many people, but with the help of my friends and party leaders, the work started and it has become a nuclear chain reaction. We recently got three oxygen concentrators with the help of one of my friends, which we will distribute to patients in need. We will continue this good work and people will come out of this pandemic,”
