If Mayor asks, we are ready to raise funds for his car: Congress

Hubballi: Mayor Iresh Anchatgeri is using an Innova Crysta on rental, and HDMC is paying Rs 70,000 per month towards the rent of the car. HDMC’s financial condition is so bad that there is no money left in the coffers of the corporation for development work. Hence, to reduce the burden of HDMC, the Congress party is ready to provide him with a car by raising funds from the public, said HDMC Corporators Senthil Kumar, Arif Bhadrapur, former mayor Prakash Kyarkatti, and Congress leader Rajat Ullagaddimath.

Speaking to reporters, the leaders said that HDMC is reluctant to take up UGD repair work worth Rs 5.65 lakh in ward 53, citing lack of funds, but the mayor is using a rental car and paying Rs 70,000 as rent. The mayor is not using the Maruti Ertiga car that was purchased for him, and that car is being used by the deputy mayor, while the deputy mayor’s sedan is gathering dust, they charged.

Rajat said the mayor, who gives lengthy speeches on model government and effective administration, has spent around Rs one crore on the renovation of his office and the offices of the chairmen of various standing committees. He asked what the necessity of conducting such work was. He charged the mayor was recklessly spending public money.

Say Mayor Campaign

Rajat and the leaders have demanded the mayor furnish an answer to their queries, and if he fails to answer, then they will launch a “Say Mayor Campaign”.

Ready to accept the car

Mayor Iresh Anchatgeri said that using a rented car is economically viable since the new car costs Rs 26 lakh, and the diesel, maintenance, and driver’s salary all cost more. The Congress leaders should have asked me before going to the media. I could have explained them better. They are making allegations without knowing the facts or economic feasibility. “They don’t have issues to raise,” he said and added that he would accept the car if they give it to him by raising funds. It is for the betterment of HDMC, he said.

Regarding corporator Arif Bhadrapur’s allegation that the HDMC is reluctant to fund UGD work in his ward, the mayor said that a grant of Rs 50 lakh has been announced and the leader of the opposition in HDMC has released Rs 15 lakh for the development of wards. He could take up these projects by spending these grants, he said.
