Hubballi: As many as 85 people were arrested in connection with last night’s violence in Hubballi, said Police Commissioner Labhu Ram, adding that, so far, seven cases have been registered in connection with the violence.
The police sources said that they have formed eight teams to investigate all the incidents that happened yesterday night, and they say the number of arrests may go up.
On Saturday night, around 11.30 pm, a large group of people belonging to a community staged a protest demanding the handing over of an accused who allegedly shared a derogatory post about a community or faith outside the Old Hubballi police station. The police said they arrested the accused immediately, filed an FIR and communicated it to the agitating mob via their leaders, but the crowd that was protesting outside the station turned violent and started throwing stones at the police station and police van.
In the violence, 12 policemen were injured and seven police vehicles damaged. The police sources said that they are investigating the case from all angles. Home Minister Araga Jnanendra, who visited the police station, was instructed to find out whether there was any involvement of any organization in this violent incident.
Sources said that a corporator’s husband was also one of the accused in this case, and he was arrested by the police. The police said that they are also wondering why the mob turned violent, despite the fact that the arrested accused had communicated about it.
Meanwhile, family members of the arrested accused visited the station, claiming that those arrested by the police were innocent and that the police made unnecessary arrests.
One of the ladies said that her son was picked up by the police while he was buying chicken and that he had not stepped outside of their house last night, claiming that her son was innocent. Police said they made arrests based on the electronic evidence.
