
Hubballi: The Ashok Nagar police have registered a case against a person under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act for allegedly marrying a minor girl. The marriage happened on January 18, but the case was registered on January 26, and it came to the media light on February 3.
According to the police, Hanumantappa Uppar, a resident of Madhav Nagar Hubballi, allegedly married a minor girl, a native of Gokak taluk, at Padeppa temple in Idakal village in Ramadurga taluk.
Police said the accused is already married and abandoned his first wife. They said the Child Development and Protection Officer had registered a case after they got a tip about the marriage and verified the alleged incident. They stated that they double-checked the alleged incident, went to the groom and bride’s homes, and gathered information.They got photographs of the alleged marriage and confirmed the age of the bride by visiting the school where she was studying.
Police Commissioner Raman Gupta said that they have registered a case and that an investigation is going on. He said the police had yet to arrest the accused, but the girl was protected. In response to a question about why the police have not registered a case against the accused under the POSCO Act, the commissioner said they are not getting the required cooperation from the girl. But the investigation is on, he said.
