Hubballi: A 22-year-old brain-dead patient has given a new lease of life to five people. Doctors at Tatwadarsha Hospital successfully harvested vital organs from the brain-dead patient on Wednesday. The donor was Pawan Kammar, an engineering student from Unkal. He was admitted to the hospital two days ago.
Nephrologist, Dr Venkatesh Moger, told hubliexpress.com that the team of surgeons harvested the eyes, kidneys, and liver from the body. The liver was transported to Apollo Hospital in Bengaluru, and one kidney was transported to KLE Hospital in Belagavi. One kidney will be transplanted to a patient admitted at Suchirayu Hospital and his eyes have been donated to KIMS Hospital in Hubballi.
The doctors declared him brain dead as he was not responding to the treatment. The team from Jeeva Sarthakate convinced the family members that he would not recover, and the family members agreed to donate the vital organs, he said. The team of doctors expressed gratitude to the family members for their good deed and said that their gesture would encourage others to do the same.
Urologist Dr Bharat Kshatri, neurosurgeon Dr SB Baligar, general surgeon Dr Ishwar Hosamani, interventionist Dr Vidya, and others took part in the process of harvesting the organs.
