Hosapete : Three students wash away in a canal, three rescued

Hosapete: Three students were swept away by the strong current of water while swimming in the Tungabhadra high-level canal in Hosapete on Saturday.

The youths who were swept away were identified as Gururaj, 18, a resident of Gunda village in Vijayanagar taluk; Anjini, 18, a resident of MG Nagar in Hosapete; and Yashwanth, 18, a resident of Koppal.

According to the Superintendent of Police, six students studying at Vijayanagar College in the city had gone for a swim in HLC around 12.30 p.m. While swimming, all six started moving away with the strong underwater currents. An alert local resident noticed all six were drowning and rescued three of them with the help of other locals.

The rescued have been identified as Vallabh, a resident of Hosapete; Gopinath, a resident of Koppal; and Chikanakatti resident Naveen. According to the police, five of the six were PUC students, and one was in his second year of BCom.

Vijayanagar Rural Police and Fire and Emergency Department officials have launched a search operation to find the missing students, said the police.
