Hubballi, By Hubli Express News Service: IPS officer Renuka Sukumar‘s appointment as the Police Commissioner of Hubballi-Dharwad sparked debates, as she hails from the SP cadre rather than the higher-ranking DIG or IGP cadres traditionally associated with the role. Critics voiced concerns that the move reflected neglect by the current Congress government towards the twin cities.
Historically, the position has been occupied by officers from the DIG or IGP ranks, making this appointment a departure from the norm.
In response to the criticism, Home Minister G Parameshwar explained that the shortage of available IG and DIG level officers necessitated the selection of an IPS officer. He acknowledged past misallocations of IPS officers and the ongoing scarcity of senior-level officers, leading to the decision to appoint the experienced SP cadre officer, Renuka Sukumar, to the position.
Taking office recently as the Commissioner of Police, Renuka Sukumar stands as the first woman to hold this esteemed post.
