Chetan Hirekerur, an independent Corporator of the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, has been arrested under the Goonda Act and sent to Belagavi Central Jail, according to police sources.
The Gokul Road police arrested him on Thursday based on his criminal history and the perceived threat he posed to the peace and tranquility of society.
The arrest of HDMC Corporator Chetan Hirekerur under the Goonda Act has raised eyebrows, especially since he had shown his support for former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar just a day prior by participating in his nomination procession. Some of Shettar’s supporters, including Nagesh Kalaburgi, have claimed that the arrest was politically motivated and a clear sign that the BJP is afraid of Shettar’s growing support.
Despite attempts to intimidate Shettar’s supporters, it seems clear that his victory in the constituency is inevitable, said and added that the arrest of Hirekerur may be a signal to discourage support for Shettar, but it is unlikely to have much impact on the ground. The BJP’s actions may even galvanize more support for Shettar, who remains a popular and respected figure in the constituency and region, said Nagesh Kalaburgi.
