Hubballi: The Hubballi-Dharwad Bus Rapid Transit System (HDBRTS) will improve 12 traffic junctions to improve traffic flow on the HDBRTS corridor and adjacent mixed traffic lanes. If all goes as planned, the work will start soon.

HDBRTS officials have said that junction improvement work is part of their continuous efforts to make the flow of traffic easy. And according to the plan, 12 circles, i.e., Pinto circle (near BSNL office), Unkal Market, Unkal Cross, Amargol, Navanagar, Rayapur. SDM Hospital, Navalur Railway Station, Lakamanahalli, Suvarna Petrol Pump, Corporation, and Court Circle.

According to Ramesh Gudraddi, General Manager (Civil) BRTS, they would widen and improve the junctions by making a few alterations, such as decreasing the size of the medians at a few junctions, replacing the damaged signal lights, and making way for pedestrian crossings. Vehicles make abrupt right turns at intersections, making it impossible for people to cross. As a result, the medians would be extended so that vehicles could travel a little further to make turns, while pedestrians could stand on the expanded median until traffic cleared.

The GM also stated that they are not acquiring land for the intersection widening. They are expanding the available space by making various changes. He stated that the BRTS had proceeded after consulting with traffic police. This is an attempt to reduce traffic.

The GM stated that they are going to construct a skywalk at the KIMS junction after learning about the difficulties encountered by people attempting to reach KIMS from one end and vice versa. A skywalk with a lift would be built to aid the elderly and those who have difficulty climbing the steps. The junction upgrade work would be undertaken at a cost of Rs two crore, he said, adding that tenders for the work had been invited and that work would likely begin soon.
