Bengaluru: The Karnataka state government has decided to rename Ramanagara district as “Bengaluru South District.” The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at Vidhana Soudha today.
Addressing the press after the cabinet meeting, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced, “A significant decision has been made to rename Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South District.”
He clarified that Ramanagara will continue to function as the district headquarters and that there will be no changes to the administrative center. “Only the name of the district is being changed. An official order in this regard will be issued soon,” he said.
Responding to questions about the impact of the renaming, Shivakumar stated, “No financial expenditure will be incurred for this name change. Historically, Ramanagara was part of Bengaluru district. Kanakapura and Channapatna too were part of Bengaluru. I myself once served as a member of the Bengaluru District Panchayat. The Bengaluru name should have been retained, and that is why we have taken this decision.”
“In fact, from now on, even I should be referred to as a resident of Bengaluru South District,” he added.
Shivakumar also emphasized that the central government does not have direct authority over such name changes. “There was no requirement for central approval. However, we have informed the Centre about the decision as a formality. Bengaluru South is growing rapidly on the global stage, and the renaming has been done in accordance with legal frameworks. There will be no changes to the structure or jurisdiction of the current constituency,” he assured.
