First time in NK: Dr. Chetan Hoskatti and his team successfully perform rare surgery.

Hubli Express News

Hubballi: Known vascular and endovascular surgeon Dr. Chetan Hoskatti and his team successfully performed an endovascular repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm at Suchirayu Hospital in Hubballi.

Dr. Hoskatti said it is a very rare surgery, performed for the first time in North Karnataka.

Defusing a Time Bomb:

A 78-year-old male presented with abdominal aortic aneurysms (10 cm) with impending rupture with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia, not fit for general anesthesia or open bypass repair (aortic aneurysms > 5 cm have a risk of rupture) underwent this procedure, he said.

The endovascular stent-graft repair was done through femoral puncture under local anesthesia.

Dr. Hosakatti said the procedure was done with two groin punctures under local anesthesia with stent-graft placement. The surgery was successful, and the patient started ambulating the next day and was discharged after two days. If it was not repaired, there was a risk of rupture as its size increases leading to sudden death due to massive internal bleeding.

Hoskatti said the surgery lasted around three hours, and he had a follow-up health check on Thursday and is doing fine.

He said, “Abdominal aortic aneurysms are defined as an abnormal dilatation of the abdominal aorta up to more than 50% of its diameter (ballooning of the main artery in the abdomen.”

This patient had prior vascular disease, hypertension, a history of smoking, and a family history of hypercholesterolemia, Dr. Hoskatti said this condition does not have symptoms; it is a silent disease (more dangerous-if left untreated, it can grow large enough, it can rupture and lead to sudden death due to massive internal bleeding).

The patient had some renal issues, and his creatinine level was high, and when he underwent scanning, the complications were detected, he said. He said rupture is possible if the size is 4-5 cm, and this patient’s aneurysm size was 10 cm.

He said that Dr. Krishna Chaitanya, Dr. N.S. Hiregoudar, Dr. Shailendra, Dr. Mahesh N., Dr. Chetan M., and Dr. Tejas have extended their invaluable cooperation.
