Hubballi: A 37-year-old government officer was recently deceived by a cyber-trickster, resulting in a loss of Rs 2,01,999. The cybercrime police reported that the officer had created a profile on the Bharat Matrimonial site, where she befriended an individual posing as a “doctor” working in New York.
The officer is a resident of Laxmi Nagar in the Gokul Road Area, the police said and added that after engaging in online conversations, the fraudster claimed to have sent a valuable gift to the officer and presented fake emails from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) as evidence. Subsequently, the lady was coerced into paying taxes to release the supposed gift, which was purportedly worth over Rs 1 crore. Sadly, she ended up losing Rs 2.01 lakh in the process, the police said.
Upon realizing she had been cheated, the officer promptly reported the incident to the cybercrime police and filed a case against the fraudster.
