The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada has awarded the well-known senior neuropsychiatrist, Dr Alok Kulkarni, the prestigious “International Marshall Fellowship”, for the year 2022–23.
They have awarded it to only six candidates across the globe, and Dr Alok is the only doctor from India to get this fellowship for this year.
Dr. Alok Kulkarni is the son of renowned psychiatrist Dr. Vinod Kulkarni. Dr Alok is known for treating mood disorders, anxiety, and depression and is also known as a de-addiction specialist. He has treated a number of patients successfully, and the patients are leading happy lives now.
Dr. Alok received his MD (Psychiatry), and DPM from NIMHANS Bengaluru before passing the world’s most difficult exam, the MRCP (Psychiatry) from England. He is credited with having passed all three parts of MRCP in his very first attempt. Dr. Alok will conduct research in Vancouver under the supervision of renowned psychiatrist Dr. Laxmi Yatham. Dr. Alok’s special fields of interest are depression, alcohol dependence, and bipolar disorder.
Dr. Alok said that he will start the post-doctoral research fellowship in mood disorders (depression and bipolar disorders) at the University of British Columbia. The longer-term aim is to establish a regional centre at Hubballi for treating difficult-to-treat bipolar disorder and treatment-resistant depression and substance misuse and psychotic disorders. He will begin the fellowship in November 2022, and it will be for a year, he said.
