Kochi: On November 30, Vice Admiral Makarand Arvind Hampiholi assumed the charge as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Southern Naval Command. He is a native of Dharwad in Karnataka.
The Flag Officer is an Anti-Submarine Warfare specialist and an alumnus of the 64th course of the National Defence Academy (President’s Gold Medal), Defence Services Staff College (Scudder Medal), the erstwhile College of Naval Warfare, Mumbai (Commander-in-Chief Silver Medal) and the prestigious National Defence College, New Delhi. The Flag officer holds the qualification of MPhil in Strategic and Security Studies from two universities.
A recipient of the Ati Vishist Seva Medal and the Nao Sena Medal (Devotion to Duty), he has held various key operational, staff, and training appointments, including the command of INS Nashak (Missile Vessel), INS Magar (Landing Ship Tank (Large)) and INS Talwar (Frigate). During his command of INS Nashak and INS Talwar, the ships were awarded the “Best Ship” trophies. His command assignments ashore include command of the National Coast Guard, Mauritius, from Apr 2003 to Apr 2005 where he was commended by the Commissioner of Police, Mauritius, and, as the Commandant, Naval Academy, and Commanding Officer of INS Mandovi, from Jun 2007 to Jun 2009.
His major staff tenures ashore include Joint Director at the Directorate of Personnel at Naval Headquarters, Naval Advisor to the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, Senior Directing Staff at the Naval War College, Mumbai, and Principal Director Staff Requirements at Naval Headquarters.
On promotion to the rank of Rear Admiral in Feb 2015, he tenanted the appointment of Assistant Chief of Personnel (Human Resources Development), and thereafter as the Flag Officer Sea Training on Oct 16. He subsequently commanded the Western Fleet as the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Fleet from Jan 2018 to Mar 2019. On promotion to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 27 Mar 19, the Flag officer assumed the charge of Naval Operations as the Director General Naval Operations. He was the Commandant of the prestigious Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala prior to assuming the Command of the Southern Naval Command.
The Flag Officer is the first alumnus of Sainik School Bijapur to have risen to the coveted appointment as the Commanding-in-Chief of Command Headquarters across all three services.
