Dharwad: A retired person from the city was cheated by cyber criminals, and the victim lost a whopping Rs 1.19 crore. The victim registered a complaint with the cybercrime police on February 6 ( Monday)
According to the cybercrime police, the victim is a 77-year-old retired person from Dhawad’s Saptapur area. He used to work as a professor at Canada’s University of Ottawa.
The police said that the miscreants somehow collected details about his work and stay in Canada and contacted him on October 3, 2022, and informed him that his ex-colleague John Clerk, who died in an accident incident while he was a professor at the University of Canada, and his wife Dobera is suffering from cancer and receiving treatment at a hospital in England. She may not survive the battle against cancer, and she drafted a will in his name to donate her entire life’s savings to help the poor and refugees by creating a charitable trust.
The miscreants informed the victim that if they convert the dollars she mentioned in the will to Indian rupees, it would be Rs 45.69 crore. The miscreants informed him that they have already transferred the money to the Reserve Bank of India’s Delhi branch, and to transfer that money to his bank account, he needs to pay the registration fee, security duty, income tax, and other fees and charges.
The miscreants convinced him by sending letters on the fake letterheads of the RBI and mailing them in the name of the bank. The victim transferred money to miscreants, believing their words in phases, before realizing that he had been cheated, the police said.
The victim has registered a case with the cybercrime police, and an investigation is going on.
