Dharwad: farmer dies by suicide


Dharwad: A farmer allegedly died by suicide by jumping into a lake near Yaribudihal in Kundagol taluk on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as Gangappa Kadappa Kadannavar, 57, a resident of Basapur village in Laxmeshwar taluk. According to the police, the deceased had borrowed a crop loan of Rs 3.61 lakh to grow the crop, but due to incessant rain, the crop was damaged, and he was worried about repayment of the loan. The deceased was upset with the financial losses he suffered and took an extreme step of ending his life, said the police. Gudgeri police have registered a case.

A farmer from Kalaghatagi ends life

In another incident, a farmer from Kalaghatagi taluk died by suicide. According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Yallappa Niagadi, 74, a resident of Lingankoppa.

He availed a crop loan of Rs 3.40 lakh from a bank and used that money to grow the crops but because of excess rainfall; the crop was damaged and suffered financial losses. He was worried over repayment of loan and ended his life by hanging himself to a tree in a farm field near Gambyapur in Kalaghatgi taluk on January 17.
