Pakistan is experiencing a severe economic crisis, resulting in inflation and difficulty for the common people to meet basic needs. In response, a free flour scheme was launched for the poor in Punjab province under the Ramzan package.
However, a video on Twitter shows citizens in Peshawar looting a truck delivering free wheat flour meant for distribution to the underprivileged classes. The protesters blocked the road and stood in queues for hours to get a 10-kilogram bag.
Pakistan media reported that four elderly people died due to stampedes and exhaustion in a bid to collect free flour. The government set up distribution points to provide relief to the poor, but a lack of facilities and huge crowds led to chaos. Pakistan’s economy is in need of external financing, with foreign exchange reserves declining to around USD 3 billion, reported Pakistan dailies.
