Hubballi: Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) doctors performed a very rare surgery on Wednesday. Doctors of the general surgery department surgically removed the gallbladder of a 36-year-old man with situs inversus totalis (SIT), a rare congenital anomaly characterized by a complete transposition of all the viscera. It means all the organs that should normally be located on the right side of the viscera were on the left side.
Surgeon Dr. Narayan Hebsur told www.hubliexpress.com that the patient walked into the hospital with abdominal pain on his left side, and during imaging examinations of this patient, SIT was revealed. The patient had multiple stones in his gallbladder (chronic calculous cholecystitis), so it was decided to surgically remove the gallbladder (cholecystectomy).
Dr. Hebsur said it was a routine operation, but the challenge was to hold the equipment and perform the surgery as his organ (the gallbladder) was on the left side instead of the right side. He said the difficulty was handling the laparoscopic instruments with the left hand and peddling with the left foot, and it would be normally difficult for a right-handed doctor.
He said in the operating room, the laparoscopic devices were equipped in a mirror image position for conventional laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the French position with modified port insertion. Patient underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy without any difficulties by right-handed surgeons.
The doctor said that the operation took a bit more time, but they finished it within an hour and a half. The doctor said the patient is recovering well and would be discharged soon. He said it is a very rare case; perhaps this is the first time in KIMS that this surgery on an SIT patient has been performed.
Dr. Ramalingappa Antartani expressed his happiness and congratulated the team of doctors who successfully performed a very rare and interesting surgery.
Dr Narayan Hebsur, Dr Suresh Huchchannavar, Dr S.Y. Mulkipatil, Dr Hanumantha B Vaggara, Dr Parvathy K.S., Dr Arjun, Dr Mallikarjun Anandrao Chalmal, and Dr Nupur Vaish were part of the surgical team.
Dr Basavaraj Kallapur, Dr Prema Raddi, Dr Milon Mitragotri, Dr Rahul Bankapur, Dr Hemashree, Dr Akhila, and Dr Prerana were part of the anesthesiology team.
Dr. Hebsur thanked Director Dr. Ramalingappa Antartani, Medical Superintendent Dr. Arun Kumar, Principal Dr. Ishwar Hosamani, the head of the department of general surgery, the HoD of anesthesiology and team, nursing staff, and OT technicians for providing support.
