Expressing his grief over the death of Karnataka student Naveen Gyanagoudar from Chalageri village in Haveri in Ukraine, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Sunday spoke to Naveen’s father Shekar Gowda over the phone and consoled the family.

Bommai obtained more details about Naveen and stated that he was with the family at this hour of grief. “It is a big blow. May the almighty be two eternal peace on Naveen. You must be brave to bear the tragic happening,” Bommai said.

All efforts are on to bring the mortal remains of Naveen to India. Talks are on with officials of the External Affairs Ministry in this regard, Bommai said during his conversation with Neveen’s father.

Choking with grief, Shekar Gowda said that he had spoken with his son just in the morning over the phone and he used to call up twice or thrice every day.

Amit, Naveen’s friend also staying with him in the Arkhitektora Beketova Metro station bunker, told reporters that he woke up late, but Naveen went out to the market at 6 a.m. to grab some food, but at 7.58 a.m., Naveen dialed again and asked his friends to transfer some money because he was low on currency on his card. When other friends contacted as to why he was taking so long, they were informed that he had died by a Ukrainian.

Naveen’s cousin spoke with an MEA officer, who confirmed that Naveen was killed as a result of the shelling.

The officer informed his cousin that the MEA is working hard to bring his body to India as soon as possible as it is a war zone, the body will be preserved and all efforts to hand over the mortal remains to the parents.

Venkatesh, a friend of Shekharappa Naveen’s father, has asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to repatriate all Indians who have become stranded in Ukraine at any cost.

He told reporters that his son was also a student at Naveen’s college, that they were good friends, and that they shared a bunker. Venkatesh reported that Naveen awoke early in the morning and went outside to buy food and that he was killed in the shelling incident.
