
The State Chief Minister of Karnataka, Basavaraj Bommai, recently announced the ‘7 Wonders of Karnataka,’ which represent the unique diversity of the state. These seven sites were unveiled at a grand event held in Bangalore and have been declared as landmarks of the state.
Each of the seven wonderful places has been designated under different categories, including prehistoric sites, architecture, philosophy, nature, and history. The ‘Great Stone Age Wonder’ of Hirebenakal Rock Tombs in Koppal district, which dates back to 800-200 BC, was among the seven wonders announced.
The historical site of Hampi, located in the Vijayanagara district, was declared an “archaeological wonder.” Hampi, built between the 14th and 16th centuries, represents the glory of the great Vijayanagara Empire. Another historical site that made the list is the magnificent 57-foot statue of Gommateshwara, erected in the 10th century at the head of Vindhyagiri in the present-day Hassan district of Sravanabelagola. It has been declared a “philosophical wonder.”
The architectural marvel of Gol Gumbaz, built in the 17th century by Sultan Mohammad Adil Shah of Bijapur (now Vijayapura), was also among the seven wonders. The world-famous Amba Vilasa Palace in Mysore, built by the Wodeyar dynasty in the 19th and 20th centuries, was declared a ‘royal wonder.’
Jog Falls, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in India, located in Shivamogga district, was declared a ‘natural wonderland’. Meanwhile, Netrani Island, located in the Arabian Sea near Murudeshwar in Uttara Kannada district, was designated a ‘natural wonder’ and hailed as a symbol of love, thanks to its heart-shaped structure.
Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, presented certificates to the deputy commissioners of the winning sites at the event. This announcement is expected to boost tourism in Karnataka and promote the unique diversity of the state to the world.
