Rio de Janeiro: In a significant development, Luiz Antônio da Silva Braga, known as Zinho, the chief of Rio de Janeiro’s largest militia group, surrendered to federal police after negotiations.

With 12 arrest warrants against him, Zinho had been on the run since 2018. Militias, originally formed in the 1990s, have evolved into powerful entities involved in protection services and drug trafficking.

Zinho’s group controls Rio’s west region and has been linked to recent violent incidents. The surrender marks a major breakthrough in law enforcement efforts against Rio’s criminal networks.
