Bengaluru: BJP candidate CK Ramamurthy won in Bengaluru’s Jayanagar constituency by a margin of 16 votes after multiple rounds of recounting due to protests by the Congress.
Congress’s Sowmya Reddy got 47.85% of the votes with 57,781 votes, while Ramamurthy secured 57,797 votes. After rounds of counting, Reddy had a narrow 294-vote lead over Ramamurthy.
Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar accused election commission officials of trying to distort the result of Sowmya Reddy and staged a demonstration outside the polling booth demanding justice. After hours of tense wait, Ramamurthy was declared the winner.
The Congress has won 135 seats in the 224-member Karnataka Assembly, while the BJP has won 66 seats and the JD(S) 19, according to the Election Commission website. Shivakumar also filed a complaint with the poll body regarding the issue.
