Hubballi: Altaf Kittur, a former HDMC member and Congress leader has said that he would contest the upcoming elections as an independent candidate.
Despite pressure from leaders within the Congress party, Kittur has stated that he will not be withdrawing his nomination.
In a press conference, Kittur expressed his disappointment with the Congress party’s failure to field a Muslim candidate in any of the constituencies of the Dharwad district, which he believes to be a betrayal of the Muslim community.
Altaf Kittur had initially sought a party ticket from the Hubballi-Dharwad (West) constituency, however, his request was denied, leading him to run as an independent candidate in the Hubballi Central constituency. While the decision has been made, the Congress party is concerned that Kittur’s candidacy may result in the splitting of the Muslim vote, potentially harming the chances of Jagadish Shettar, a prominent BJP leader.
The situation remains fluid, and it is unclear whether Kittur will ultimately withdraw his nomination or continue with his campaign. If he decides to proceed, it is expected that he may divide the minority vote, leading to a potentially unpredictable outcome in the upcoming election.
Tomorrow (April 24) is the last day for the withdrawal of nominations.
