An advertisement showing actor Akshay Kumar, tweeted by Union Minister for Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari to promote safer cars with six airbags, is going viral, with critics claiming it promotes dowry.
Akshay Kumar, dressed as a police officer, is shown chastising the bride’s father for sending his daughter and groom off in a car with only two airbags after the wedding.
MP-Rajya Sabha, leader of Shiv Sena Priyanka Chaturvedi said “This is such a problematic advertisement. Who passes such creatives? Is the government spending money to promote the safety aspect of a car or promoting the evil& criminal act of dowry through this ad?,” she wrote.

Opposition parties have slammed the underlying meaning that the car was a gift from the bride’s father, accusing the government of “promoting dowry.”

This ad is clearly showcasing the transport department’s attempt to promote six airbags in cars. But, the way it is depicted is highly messed up and a downright horrible message to society.#Ad #AkshayKumar #Dowry https://t.co/J90eZ1N0Kp

Since business tycoon Cyrus Mistry was killed in an accident near Mumbai earlier this month, attention has been focused heavily on road safety, particularly the use of seatbelts and airbags.
Following the death of Cyrus Mistry, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari had said that those on the back seats of vehicles will soon be fined for not wearing seatbelts.
